What Is The UUJMC And Why Wont You Leave Me Alone?

UUJMC stands for the University of Ulster at Jordanstown Mountaineering Club. Jordanstown has a long history of mountaineering and the current club was reformed from the ashes of the old one in 1998. See here for more information.

And we wont ever leave you alone, face it, if you've got this far your doomed to lead a life of climbing already, you might as well just get used to it. To ease your way have a quick peek at the Useful information for Freshers page, I hear it contains useful information for freshers...

What Does A Mountaineering Club Do?

What don't we do! Mountaineering is a broad term that means walking up to the top of a mountain and then -hopefully- back down again. When it gets too steep to walk some climbing is required and when it gets to cold for climbing some ice climbing is required. When you get back down to the bottom some drinking is required.

  • Rock climbing : Originally the steep part of mountaineering rock climbing has since evolved into a sport all of its own. From long climbs of many pitches to shorter routes climbed simply to get to the top of the route rather than the top of the mountain. Equipment ranges from harnesses, helmets climbing shoes and chalk bags to equipment designed to protest the route- such as ropes, bolts, nuts, hexes and camming devices. For more information about the various peaces of equipment see the Climbing Gear section. Desending from the routes often envolves absailing, which has also evolved into some sort of sport for pussbags.
  • Ice climbing : Many mountains are continually covered in a layer of ice and snow. This presents many new difficulties and specialist Climbing Gear is required to get to the top. As with rock climbing ice climbing has also evolved into a sport of its own.
  • Bouldering : Bouldering is an offshoot of rock climbing which specialises in very short, usually quite hard routes. Rather than lugging about all of the heavy gear required for rock climbing bouldering instead relies on the route being so short that a crash-mat is all that is required. This is further backed up by a human spotter who's job it is to direct you unto the pad or to stop you landing awkwardly.
  • Buildering : This is a slang term used to describe bouldering on urban structures - usually without equipment or sobriety and generally on the way home from the pub. Aspects of buildering can be seen in the art of movement known as Parkour
  • Caving : Containing aspects of mountaineering and rock climbing and a whole load of muck, caving is the exploration of caves which can include rock climbing, absailing, diving and muck.
